List of medical schools in the United States
This list of medical schools in the United States includes current and developing academic institutions which award the Doctor of Medicine (MD), Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO), and/or Doctor of Podiatric Medicine (DPM) degree, a professional level of education that is required to become a physician or a surgeon in the United States. MD-granting medical schools are accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education, DO-granting medical schools are accredited by the American Osteopathic Association Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation, and DPM-granting medical schools are accredited by the Council on Podiatric Medical Education.[1] There are currently 155 accredited MD-granting institutions,[2] 36 accredited DO-granting institutions,[3] and 9 accredited DPM-granting institutions[4] in the United States.
MD-granting institutions were the first type of medical schools established, and the first to teach allopathic, evidence-based medicine. DO-granting institutions teach a similar approach with the addition of osteopathic manipulative medicine, the graduates of which have more commonly practiced in primary care specialties.[5] Though osteopathy programs exist elsewhere, only DO graduates of United States osteopathic medical schools may practice the full scope of medicine equivalent to that of MDs. DPM-granting institutions teach medical science and treatments specific to those of the foot, ankle, and leg. Unlike dentistry and optometry, graduates from MD, DO, and DPM-granting institutions must complete a minimum 3-year, hospital-based residency after graduating medical school in order to practice independently.[6][7] MD, DO, and DPM schools are all four years in length and require a minimum of a bachelor's degree prior to matriculation.
While Alaska, Delaware, Montana, and Wyoming lack independent medical schools, these states participate in a regional campus model with the University of Washington School of Medicine known as WWAMI, which teaches all 4 years of medical school in each respective state.
