Nanohaloarchaea

Nanohaloarchaea is a clade of diminutive archaea with small genomes and limited metabolic capabilities. They are ubiquitous in hypersaline habitats, which they share with the extremely halophilic and phylogenetically distant haloarchaea.

Nanohaloarchaea were first identified from metagenomic data as a class of uncultivated halophilic archaea composed of 6 clades.[1][2]and were subsequently placed in the phylum Nanohaloarchaeota within the Diapherotrites, Parvarchaeota, Aenigmarchaeota, Nanoarchaeota, Nanohaloarchaeota (DPANN) superphylum.[3]

The lineage has since been identified in data from a range of hypersaline environments including: Australian thalassohaline lake,[4] Spanish saltern,[5] Russian soda brine,[6] Californian saltern,[7] and Chilean halite[8]

Taxonomy

The currently accepted taxonomy is based on the List of Prokaryotic names with Standing in Nomenclature (LPSN)[9] and National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI).[10]
